Originally, the tachi was the favoured sword of the samurai long before the katana came into being. It was lighter, more curved and designed for one-handed use - ideal for mounted combat.

After the first Mongol invasion of Japan, the katana evolved from the tachi. However, in later centuries, Japan returned to the old virtues and forms of the samurai warriors before the 14th century. This gave rise to a special form of katana with classic tachi fittings, as seen on the tsuba, fuchi, kashira and saya.
