In contrast to the honourable samurai, who lived by a strict code of honour, shinobi - as they were called in Japan - were shadow warriors who operated with cunning, stealth and a variety of secret weapons. They were used as spies, assassins and scouts and mastered numerous fighting techniques that still enjoy legendary status today.
The art of ninjutsu - more than just fighting
The ninjas were not only warriors, but also masters of deception and disguise. They used techniques such as disguise, psychological warfare and even chemistry to outwit their opponents. Ninjutsu, the martial art of the shinobi, involved not only unarmed combat but also the targeted use of special weapons that were perfect for covert missions - including the famous ninja sword, which is highly prized among collectors and martial artists today.
The legendary Ninjato - the classic ninja sword
One of the best-known ninja weapons is the ninjato - the traditional ninja sword. It is usually a straight, shorter sword that was developed for quick use in confined spaces. In contrast to the elegant katana of the samurai, the ninja sword was functional, easy to draw and ideal for surprise attacks. Many modern depictions show ninjas wielding this weapon, although historical evidence of its exact form is limited.
Shuriken - the deadly throwing stars
Probably the most famous ninja weapon is the shuriken. These small, sharp projectiles could injure, distract or even poison opponents. Ninjas used them both in battle and for sabotage. Their compact size made them ideal for concealed transport - just like the ninja sword, which was often carried in an inconspicuous sheath.

One of the ninja's most unusual weapons was the kusarigama, a combination of a sickle and a chain with a weight at the end. The kunai was a simple but versatile tool: as a melee weapon, climbing aid or crowbar, it served the shinobi in numerous missions. Many modern depictions show it as a throwing weapon, which is not entirely historically accurate - just like the image of the typical ninja sword, which has been heavily influenced by films and pop culture, but nevertheless remains a fascinating element of the ninja tradition.

Ninjas often had to escape unnoticed. Smoke bombs were therefore an integral part of their equipment. Using special powders and chemicals, they produced thick smoke that confused opponents and enabled them to escape. Combined with their speed and the handy ninja sword, they could disappear in a matter of seconds.
Tetsubishi - the spiky trap
Another clever tool was the tetsubishi - small, sharp metal spikes that were scattered on the ground to slow down pursuers. They could injure both foot soldiers and horses and gave the ninja valuable time to escape. These traps were often used in coordination with other weapons such as shuriken or ninja swords to gain a tactical advantage.
Secret poisons and deadly tricks
In addition to physical weapons such as the ninja sword, the shinobi also used poisons to kill silently and efficiently. They experimented with plant poisons, animal poisons and chemical substances. Shuriken, arrows or even the blades of their ninja swords were often treated with them to make even the smallest injuries fatal.
